The selection of paintings for this exhibition came from a larger survey of my work, AS-IS (finale) a Retrospective 1969-2009 at Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery, Atlanta this summer.
The exhibit was a retrospective and a finale, a celebration and sharing of work produced over 40 years. Many of the 178 plus paintings in that show had not been exhibited in Atlanta, over 60 having been produced since 2000. This show covers some of the same ground.
The selections here are from various foci: where I used images from one-a-day drawing books kept 1969-74 as subject for paintings ten years later, 1983-4: Heads from 1985-7, Single Objects 1987 into the 90s and work on Found Objects from mid-nineties to the present, appropriating imagery from my daughter’s sketchbooks and from my own stacks of drawings in notebooks, journals, on napkins, scraps of paper, backs of envelopes, etc.
My resume lists exhibitions of paintings at the High Museum, The Contemporary (Nexus), Fay Gold Gallery, Sandler Hudson Gallery and many other venues in the city, the Southeast and abroad. An early retrospective toured 7 Georgia Museums in 1984-5.
In 1967, I made a career choice, setting aside ambitions in commercial art and throwing my lot with the fine arts. The choice was intuitive. I could not articulate what it was that drew me, but as I have returned again and again to the question I finally, gradually, have realized that what Art provides is an evolving glimpse and a means to cultivating the most profound of human experience, the mystery and depth of simple being.
