Bob Davis –Artist’s Statement

I am an artist, a teacher, and a storyteller.  I currently reside in Asheville, NC.  I received a Bachelors of Fine Art from The University of Akron, Ohio, in 1983 with a focus on drawing and photography.  It was years later that I picked up a paint brush and became a self taught painter.  

I have displayed my work throughout the Southeast and on the island of Grenada, where I had lived for a period of time.  My work has been displayed in galleries, restaurants, and fine arts festivals.  

My paintings have been an evolution of process.  The paintings on display, produced in the past two years, represent two different directions I have taken.  You will find a number of pieces influenced by my travels through Central and South America, where I have been intrigued by the colors and the atmosphere surrounding the open air markets.  

The other paintings come from an ongoing series called “movement”.  With these pieces my objective has been to experiment with the way I use color and the techniques in which I lay the acrylic paint down, I have been taking my figures and attempting to merge them into the background so that the two become reliant upon one another.  The figure slowly becomes the water or the air that surrounds it.
