Service Centers


There are three service centers in the library: the Circulation Desk, the Reference Desk and the Computer Help Desk. Students will find friendly staff at these desks to help them with a range of library services. These service centers are all located on the 2nd floor of the library. The Circulation Desk is staffed during all library hours. Check posted hours for availability of the Reference Desk and Computer Help Desk.

 

Access Services


The Circulation Desk, located on 2nd floor, provides a number of services including:

  • General information
  • Book checkout
  • Course reserve
  • Heavy-demand materials: Hornbooks, Nutshells, exams, etc.
  • Lost and found
  • Martindale-Hubbell Directories (current)
  • Missing book search service
  • Book recall service
  • Conference and video room sign-up



Cataloging and Acquisitions Services


If you don’t find an item in EUCLID you think the Law Library should own, want to know the status of an item that
EUCLID indicates was ordered, or think a correction should be made in EUCLID, please ask Access Services or the Reference Desk to contact Cataloging and Acquisitions Services.

 

Computer Labs


The Library has a computer lab on the 2nd floor of MacMillan and a computer classroom on the 1st floor of MacMillan. The computers in the classroom are generally available when training is not being held. The lab and classroom have a total of 45 Pentium computers running Windows 98.

The computers have Word, WordPerfect, Excel, PowerPoint, LEXIS, Westlaw, e-mail and Internet Explorer. Use of these computers is limited to Emory law students; they are password-protected. All of the computers are also protected with McAfee software.

There are e-mail kiosks in Gambrell on the 1st floor near the Reception Desk and in the student mailroom. When school is in session, help with the computer equipment and applications is available at the Computer Help Desk on the 2nd floor of MacMillan. Students can also fill out a form (http://www.law.emory.edu/help/) to get help, or call 727-5321 during regular business hours.

 

Computer-Assisted Legal Research


The Law Library subscribes to the LEXIS and Westlaw online research systems. Access to LEXIS and Westlaw is limited to Emory law students, staff, and faculty. LEXIS and Westlaw may be used only for research directly connected with the educational activities of the school. LEXIS and Westlaw are available on all library computers. Both services are available on the World Wide Web. The URL for LEXIS is http://www.lawschool.lexis.com/ and for Westlaw is http://lawschool.westlaw.com/. Assistance in the use of LEXIS and Westlaw is available at the Reference Desk or call 727-6826.

 

Conference Rooms


There are conference rooms on the 1st floor that may be booked by Emory law students for group study. Sign-up sheets are available at the Circulation Desk where students must leave a current Emory ID.

 

Government Documents


Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library is a selective participant in the United States Federal Depository Library Program and a full participant in the European Union depository program. Reference service for government documents, or EU materials, is available by contacting Chris Hudson.

 

Interlibrary Loan


Materials not available in the Law Library, or on the Emory campus, may be obtained by interlibrary loan from another library. Requests for interlibrary loan must be submitted through ILLiad, the library's web-based interlibrary loan system. To place a request, open EUCLID, the library's online catalog, and click on the rectangular box labeled "Interlibrary Loan." It's located just above EUCLID's query box. You can also access ILLiad from the law library's interlibrary loan site.

 

Internet Services


All law students receive an e-mail/Internet account from the Law School. Students are also eligible for PPP accounts from the University.

Leisure Reading


A variety of current magazines are available in the Leisure Reading area on the 2nd floor. Recent editions of the Atlanta Constitution and New York Times are in this area. All Leisure Reading materials should remain in or be returned to this area for others to use.

Today's editions of the Atlanta Constitution, New York Times and Wall Street Journal are at the Circulation Desk. A "New Books" display is located next to Leisure Reading.

 

Messages


Library staff have no way of paging persons in the building. If you need to contact someone who is using the library, call 404-727-6824 and leave a message. We will post the message at the Circulation Desk.

 

Microforms


The Law Library has a collection of microform publications on the 1st floor. The library is equipped with a microfilm and a microfiche reader-printer.

 

Photocopiers


Self-service photocopiers are available on floor 2. All copiers take cards, but coin copies can be made as well. Duplexing (double sided copying) is available, and some copiers have document feeders that can produce 8.5 x 14 (legal size) copies. The cost per copy with an Emory ID is 9 cents per page. Guest copy cards are for sale at the Circulation Desk for one dollar. Value may be added to both ID and copy cards in the 2nd floor copy room. Copies made with guest cards cost 12 cents per page. Copies made with cash cost 25 cents per page.

A change machine in the 2nd floor Copy Center gives quarters for one dollar and five dollar bills. The library provides limited change at the Circulation Desk. There are no ATMs available in the Law School.

IST Copy Services is available during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prices are listed in Copy Service, Gambrell 101. Copying (including color copying), laminating, and binding services are available from IST.

 

Reference


The Law Library provides reference services for students and other library users. The Reference Desk is located on the 2nd floor. Reference librarians provide assistance in the use of the print collection as well as online resources including LEXIS, Westlaw, and the Internet.

 

Users with Disabilities


The Law Library is committed to providing equal access to its facilities and collections for all users in the Emory community. Library staff will make special arrangements to assist patrons with disabilities in retrieving and using library materials. The library encourages patrons with disabilities to contact Circulation or Reference staff to discuss their needs.

 

Video


The library has three video viewing rooms on the 1st floor. A list of all videos held by the library is available at the Circulation Desk. In order to use a video, a patron must leave a current ID at the Circulation Desk.
