    Searching the Federal Register

    • Use the Federal Register to find very new regulations, proposed regulations, and notices related to regulations.
    • Limit your search to regulations (new or proposed) affecting a particular part or section of the CFR
      • In Lexis, use the CFR segment and enter the numbers.  Ex:  CFR (12 & 352)
      • In Westlaw, use the "pr" field with your CFR cite
        • Use the "su" summary field with key terms for your search
      • In FDSys, use the advanced search and the CFR citation field
      • Federalregister.gov Advanced Search has a search field for CFR citation.
      • Use the LSA to browse for regulations affecting a particular CFR section
    • Limit your search to regulations from a particular agency
      • In Westlaw, use the "pr" field and the agency name in quotation marks
      • In Lexis, use the AGENCY segment and the agency name
      • In Federalregister.gov, use the Agency field.
      • In FDSys, use the advanced search and the Agency field

    • Use the RIN number to track a proposed regulation.  The RIN number is an 8-digit code assigned to each regulation, assigned before it even appears in the Regulatory Agenda. 
      • In FDSys, search in the RIN Number field in the Federal Register.
      • In FederalRegister.gov, use advanced search and the RIN number field.
      • In Lexis, use the RIN-NO segment
      • In Westlaw, search the number in the pr field
      • In Regulations.gov, use the number in the Search by Keyword or ID Number box
